About the Author:
Penny Gamble-Williams (traditional name is Çapaqitésqa which means Chappaquiddick Woman in the Wampanoag language) is an enrolled citizen of the Chappaquiddick Tribe of the Wampanoag Nation. She grew up in Providence, Rhode Island, surrounded by a creatively rich family. Her mother, an artist, instilled in her a deep appreciation for nature and the fundamentals of art.
Penny pursued formal education at the Rhode Island School of Design, the Corcoran School of Art, and the Maryland College of Art and Design. Her artistic practice includes acrylics, ink, oil crayon, and found objects, reflecting her Wampanoag heritage and Afro-American roots through distinct collages and paintings. She also crafts jewelry and designs pouches and handbags from natural materials.
With over 45 years of experience exhibiting across New England and the Mid-Atlantic, Penny leads “Spirit Art” sessions, encouraging individuals of all ages to explore their creativity. She embraces a blend of ethnic freeform abstract realism, inviting viewers to engage with her art on a personal level.
